In the world of pigeonsport, Peter van de Merwe certainly represents a point of arrival for many fanciers and a source of inspiration for just as many enthusiasts. Originally from Dordrecht, near Rotterdam, in the western part of the Netherlands, he is known for having discovered his ability in training and selecting pigeons as a teenager.

 

Peter's passion begins when as a child he finds a wounded pigeon, heals it and feeds it until the poor bird is able to return to its owner. From that moment he falls in love with these wonderful animals and, helped by his uncle Piet who gave him 11 racing pigeons, he is introduced to this world. Subsequently, thanks to his father Arie, Peter built his first loft and at the age of 14 became a member of a club in his area.

 

The results were immediately impressive and the loft that housed the first 11 pigeons soon became too small and was replaced by a much larger one. With a new 21 meter loft Peter was able to enlarge his precious team of racing pigeons and, in addition to the number of specimens, the prizes obtained also increased.

 

The Peter's colony, who over time married his wife Nathalie and with whom he had Gwen, the daughter who now works with him at the loft and helps him manage their pigeons, has 46 pairs of travelers (he runs with both partners) and 25 breeding pairs. Every year 80-100 youngsters are raised from these pigeons.

 

The quality and quantity of prizes obtained by Peter during all these years are impressive, we are talking about 37 NPO victories, several national ACE Pigeons and over 100 first places in competitions with thousands of pigeons starting.
